Why no cell phone's in school policy?

Let's start a discussion with why from a professional's point of view.

Simon Sinek is a marketing expert and motivational speaker. In this recent talk he discussed the issues about mobile technologies and their impact on generations of people having grown up on them.

For our conversation let's consider what happens during the stages of adolescence...

So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one or two elements of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying...discuss your opinion in a few coherent sentences. Do not copy my example.

  1. Early adolescence is a very stressful time. I have found that phones and technology can not only expand one's intellectual stimulation and interest, but it also functions as a coping mechanism. Even if every early adolescent had a perfect family dynamic, there is still a lot of stress with different kinds of developments and peer relationships. Technology should be monitored, specifically regarding what children are able to access, but in no way eradicated or prohibited. Phones are an entirely different story; children should be on technological devices during school, but they should not be permitted to use those devices to look through social media or go shopping, like many do on their phones.

  2. Phones should not be allowed to be used in school. Throughout Middle Adolescence, teens are craving to make friends and separate themselves from their parents. With phones, teens will most likely be on social media and will end up being distracted. If schools do not allow phones, teens will benefit with face to face communication and will learn social skills. Phones in schools will limit social benefits of making friends.

  3. Phones should not be allowed in schools, especially in the elementary/middle grades. In these times, the child is developing physically and socially, and should learn to be dependent on their friends, not on their followers for comfort and advice. It is during this time that children break away from their parents and they shouldn't become addicted to something that is dangerous.

  4. Phones should not be allowed in schools. In the middle adolescence stage, kids want and need to make friends. If they are glued to their phones, they will never get the chance to develop these skills. In addition, they find that popularity is super important. They think that more followers equals better. This is not the mindset that these teens should have. They should find friends that appreciate them, not like all their pictures. Therefore, phones should not be allowed in schools.
